Adjusting Exposure-Photoshop

I had a picture that I had taken on my cell phone (I am without a digital camera) that I wanted to use for the postsecret project. It’s a picture I took of a page from a book, and the flash had exposed the picture in some areas more than others. I tried to google how to adjust the exposure, but nothing that I found really worked. I decided to just try and figure it out on my own. I went to the adjustments panel, and selected the exposure option. There, I was able to adjust the exposure, but in order to get that right, my picture became much darker than I had wanted it. I used the brightness and saturation options to adjust the photo to what I wanted.
