How to Create a Custom Brush on Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop offers a variety of preset brush patterns, but it also allows users to create their own custom brushes. To begin customizing a brush, open a new file by clicking “File > New…”. The dimensions of the file does not matter, however, the color mode must be set to “Grayscale”. Click “OK” to proceed. Image

You should now see a plain white canvas with the dimensions of your choosing. Now, click on the Brush Tool on the side toolbar. You may select a different size paintbrush and paintbrush pattern at the top toolbar. Once you have chosen your desired brush, begin drawing the pattern of your custom brush on the blank white canvas.Image

After you have completed drawing your custom brush pattern, use the Rectangular Marquee Tool on the side toolbar to select your pattern. Then, click “Edit > Define Brush Preset…”.Image

Name your custom brush pattern. Click “OK” to confirm.Image

After you have clicked “OK”, your custom brush pattern should be complete and fully accessible at the top toolbar when the Brush Tool is selected. Find your customized brush and get creative.

  1. I didn’t even know you could make custom brushes. This seems pretty useful and quite simple too. I’m excited try this out because it has potential to be pretty cool or really funny. I like that you have a good amount of screen shots too for visuals.
