Grunge Watercolor Effect in Adobe Photoshop

Step 1: Open a blank document in adobe photoshop. Use the fill tool to turn it black

Image

Step 2: Go to layer > new layer and use the fill tool to make it white. Then go to Filter>Texture>Texturizer. Set the texture to Canvas, 75% for the Scaling, 3 for the Relief and choose right top for the light.

Step 3: Import a grunge / old parchment image. I used this one: http://images.wikia.com/assassinscreed/images/8/8b/Old_paper.jpg

Set the opacity to around 75%

Step 4: Import the photo you would like to use. I’ve chosen one from a trip to Hawaii last summer

Image

The image has to go beneath the texture layer. Then go to layer > group layer. This should be the order of your layers:

(ignore “colors” for now)

Step 5: Select the folder with “Group 1” and go to Layer>Layer Mask>Hide all. The image is now hidden behind the paper. Select any paint brush and set your color to white. As you being to paint the image will appear.

Image

Step 6: Go to layer > new layer. Make sure this layer is below your photograph. (Reference the order above.) Using a variety of colors and brushes paint around your picture.

Step 7: Adjust the image color by going to Image>Adjustment>Photo Filter. Then set the warning Filter (85) and 55% for the Density.

(you can skip this step if your satisfied with your painting)

You’re all done!
